The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team extended their winning streak to four games as they beat the Windsor Lancers 4-0 on Sunday, October 12 at Varsity Arena.
The Blues scored on their first power-play opportunity when Sarah Stephen (Pickering, Ont.) sent a low snap shot from the point through a Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) screen and into the net.
On the next Toronto power-play, Hill sent a booming shot at the Windsor net and second-year forward Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) was there to bury the rebound.
Minutes later, Scarborough native Amanda Fawns would walk out of the corner and put one through the legs of Windsor goalie Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.) to give the Blues a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The rest of the game went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging scoring opportunities. With Tessier pulled and two Blues skaters in the box, Toronto found themselves down three players late in the third period. The squad rose to the challenge with some stellar defensive play and killed off the six-on-three disadvantage. Urban would pot an empty-net goal and secure the 4-0 victory for the Blues.
Toronto goalie Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) recorded her second shut out of the season and was named the Blues player of the game for her efforts.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 18 when they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
