MIRABELLI LEADS BLUES TO OVERTIME VICTORY

Second-year defenceman Bianca Mirabelli (Oakville, Ont.) scored her first career goal with 21 seconds left in overtime as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team edged past the Waterloo Warriors 5-4 on Saturday, October 11th.

After blocking a shot in her own end, Mirabelli skated the length of the ice and singlehandedly beat three Waterloo defenders as she roofed a backhand shot over Warriors goalie Erica Bridgewater (Georgetown, Ont.) for the Blues overtime victory.

In a classic back-and-forth battle, Jo-Ann Scott (New Dundee, Ont.) opened up the scoring as she potted Waterloo’s first goal of the game. Second-year forwards Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) and Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) scored for the Blues before fifth-year Gryphons veteran Sarah Bryson (Kitchener, Ont.) potted one of her own. The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Waterloo would take the lead five minutes into the second, however Madoc, Ont. native Darby Smith would even things up on a Blues power-play. Smith received a direct face-off win from Emily Milito (Ottawa, Ont.) and sent it into the top corner of the Badgers net.

Randi Lynn Wilson (Dublin, Ont.) gave the Warriors their last lead before fourth-year assistant captain Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) scored with less than three minutes to go to send the game into overtime.

The Varsity Blues return to Toronto tomorrow (Oct. 12) when they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 5 p.m.
