After leading the team to a 5-1 pool play record, third-year skip Evan Lilly helped the University of Toronto Varsity Blues upset the defending champion Waterloo Warriors in quarter-final action en route to earning the OUA men's curling title this past week at Guelph Curling Club.
After the Blues forced an extra end with two points in the eighth, skip Evan Lilly froze his final rock near the button, putting the pressure on the Warriors' Jake Walker to stick his last shot. Walker's final stone slid just past the button, allowing the Blues to steal a point and a berth in the semifinalsÂ
Lilly, a third-year medicine student, earned the Blues a spot at the upcoming national championships with a 7-6 semi-final win over the Brock Badgers on Monday morning.
The Sudbury, Ont., native then helped the Blues cruise to a 9-1 championship final victory over Laurier. After taking an early 2-1 advantage in the championship final, skip Evan Lilly and the Blues exploded for a critical four points in the fifth end of play to take a commanding 6-1 lead over Laurier.  In the ensuing sixth end, Laurier skip Aaron Squire's final stone came up just short of the house, allowing the Varsity Blues to steal two more points and put the contest on ice.
