The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football program is pleased to announce that former CFL linebacker Kevin Eiben has been hired as the team's new defensive coordinator for the 2014 season.
"Kevin is a recognized leader and defensive specialist in the football community," said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. "He's been successful at every level he's played at, he is a Grey Cup champion, and all of that knowledge and success are now translating into coaching. His leadership skills are evident and I'm excited to have him on board, knowing that he'll make in immediate impact with our players."
A 12-year veteran of the Canadian Football League, Eiben spent 11 years with Toronto Argonauts and one season with the Hamilton Tigercats before retiring in 2013. Drafted by the Argos in the fourth round of the 2001 CFL draft, he was name a league all-star three times, an East division all-star five times during his career, and was a key member and leader of Toronto's 2004 Grey Cup championship run.
He ended his career with 722 career tackles, which left him second only to his former teammate Mike O'Shea, for the most tackles by a Canadian in CFL history.
A four-time Academic all-American at Bucknell University, where he excelled at both football and baseball, Eiben moved onto the Ticats front office following retirement and became the manager of new business development.
Shortly after that he moved into the realm of coaching and was brought on as the McMaster Marauders defensive coordinator in August 2013, where his defensive unit was the second best in the OUA in yards allowed per game and set a new school record of 19 consecutive quarters without giving up a touchdown.
Eiben was also the owner of Sports Specific Training (SST) – a high-performance training centre based out of Oakville that he had managed for the last five years (2009-2014).
