John Smits joined the Varsity Blues coaching staff in 2017. Smits was a member of the men’s soccer team from 2008 to 2011, while completing his undergraduate in cell biology and anatomy. During his playing career, Smits made three national championship appearances with the Blues and won one OUA gold medal in 2010.
After his time with the Blues, Smits spent four years (2012-2015) with FC Edmonton in the North American Soccer League (NASL), where he would go on to win the Golden Glove award with the team in 2014.
Smits is currently a member of Team Canada’s beach soccer team and was part of the winning team at the 2023 National Futsal Championship.
