Prior to joining the Varsity Blues, Katz led the Humber College men's basketball team for 19 seasons (503-175 overall record). During that time, he led the Hawks to the Final Four every year, winning seven provincial championships and five national titles while also producing seven All-Canadian players. Katz is also a four-time OCAA coach of the year and a three-time CCAA coach of the year award winner and was inducted into the Humber Varsity "Hall of Fame" in 2004.
Katz is also the assistant coach of the Canadian national basketball squad, and took part in the 2000 Olympic Games and World Championships in 1993 and 2002. In 1997, he guided Canada's team at the World University Games in Sicily to a silver medal. Katz was also the head coach of the Ontario provincial team from 1986 to 1989, capturing one gold and one silver medal.
Katz was named both OUA and CIS coach of the year in the 2007-08 season.
