1995 Wilson Cup Champions

The first University of Toronto men's basketball team was formed in 1907-08, and games were played against McGill and Queen's. There was no formal intercollegiate league until the following year, when the Intercollegiate Basketball Union was formed in 1908-09.  U of T won the first official intercollegiate championship in the spring of 1909, after victories over McGill and Queen's, and became the first recipient of the Wilson Cup, presented by Harold Wilson of Toronto. The Varsity senior team also took home the top spot in 1910-11 and 1912-13.

After the 1914-15 season, the Intercollegiate Basketball Union ceased to function and games were suspended until the end of World War I. The reorganization of the league came in the fall of 1919 with Toronto tying for the championship with McGill that season and winning it outright in 1920-21. The University of Western Ontario joined the senior league in 1924-25.

In 1938-39, an unusual situation arose when the season culminated in a three-way tie between Toronto, Western and McGill. In spite of repeated efforts, this tie could not be broken, and a triple championship was declared. Then, after the 1939-40 season, the league was suspended for the duration of World War II.

The four-team league resumed play in 1945-46 and McMaster University joined the ranks in 1951-52, followed by Assumption College (Windsor) in 1952-53. A major realignment of university leagues in central Canada occurred in 1955, and Toronto joined with its five basketball partners in a new Ontario-Quebec athletic Association (OQAA). In 1960-61, the Ontario Agriculture College (Guelph) entered the league, followed by the University of Waterloo in 1961-62, and then by Carleton University and the University of Ottawa in 1968-69.

Post-season playoffs were introduced in 1965-66 and basketball continued to be a major sport as the Ontario league expanded and reorganized during the following three decades. In 1971, all Ontario-based universities combined to form the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) for men's sports and basketball flourished with new divisional scheduling that occasionally included some Quebec-based schools on a "playing privileges" format. On July 1, 1997,  the OUAA merged with the Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OWIAA) to form the current Ontario University Athletics (OUA). The successful arrangement of divisional scheduling, including extensive playoffs, has been an ongoing feature of OUA basketball competition.

As part of each reorganization, it was agreed that the records and trophies of the OQAA and its predecessors would remain with and be recognized by the new leagues.

U of T has collected the conference crown 14 times, second-best in the OUA, and last earned the Wilson Cup in 1995. In 1996, the Varsity Blues were the OUA East champions and Wilson Cup finalists.

In the past 30 years, a number of Varsity Blues have spent time with the Canadian National team including Eddy Meguerian, Rob Wilson, Mark Harvey and Jason Dressler.
