The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team earned a point with a 1-1 draw versus the visiting Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.

Toronto showcased dominant possession throughout the first 45 minutes. This led to plenty of chances for the Blues in the first half, highlighted by a shot from close for second-year defender Thomas Tome at the 28^th minute. However, Queen's goalkeeper Daniel Clarke stood tall to keep the game scoreless. Clarke would finish the contest with six saves.

The Gaels did shift action to the other side of the pitch for a short period in the opening half. This allowed for a shot from distance on goal which second-year goalkeeper Shane Perera was able to dive for the save in the 37^th minute. The Blues defence would continue to stifle many Gaels attacks as Perera finished the afternoon with two saves.

Following the halftime break, Toronto capitalized in transition using their speed to disrupt the Queen's defence. Streaking down the right side, fifth-year defender Kai Garvey sent a cross into the Gaels box where a scramble allowed the ball to land on the foot of second-year midfielder Micah Joseph. Joseph made no mistake as he deposited the goal into the net for a 49^th minute marker.

A back-and-forth second half allowed the Gaels to respond in the 65^th minute, finding an equalizer from Damola Akanni.

Looking for any opportunity to try and retake the lead, the Blues put together a number of chances late. In extra time, fourth-year midfielder Quinton Chung nearly found the net on a free kick shot from over 40-yards out, but the effort went just wide. Less than a minute later, another ball put into the Queen's area found its way to fourth-year forward Andrea Schifano but Clarke was once again able to make the stop to maintain the draw.

The Varsity Blues will next face the Nipissing Lakers at Varsity Stadium tomorrow (Sept. 6) afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets and the match streamed online at oua.tv.
