The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team continued the Moncton Preseason Tournament with a 2-1 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday (Sept. 26) afternoon in Moncton, N.B.
Following their opening win versus Moncton, the Blues carried their momentum into their matchup with the Huskies. The Blues struck first in the opening frame as fourth-year forward Taylor Delahey finished off a feed from her twin sister Ashley Delahey. Meanwhile, first-year goalie Jayden Elias made 14 stops in the first period to keep the Blues in front through 20 minutes of play.
Saint Mary's tied the game in the first minute of the second period as Mia Faseruk found the back of the net. The Huskies continued to apply the pressure on U of T in the middle frame, holding a 11-5 shot advantage but Toronto's defence held firm to keep the game level. Heading into the third period, U of T held a 22-17 edge in the faceoff circle with Delahey and fifth-year captain Kaitlyn McKnight having strong performances at the dot.
The Blues regained the lead early in the third period as second-year forward Dawson Benson finished off a feed from fourth-year forward Abby Whitworth as the Kamloops, B.C., native picked up the game winning goal. From that point onwards, the Blues locked the game down as Elias picked up the win between the pipes with 29 saves.
The Blues will play their final game of the Moncton Preseason Tournament on Sunday (Sept. 27) morning when they take on the McGill Martlets. Puck drop is scheduled for 11 a.m. Â
