Taking part in the Ontario University Softball (OUS) Opening Weekend in Cobourg, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team split their four-game series across the two-day showcase.

Beginning their 2026 campaign on Saturday (Sept. 12), the Blues delivered dominant wins over both the Guelph Gryphons and Laurier Golden Hawks. U of T first knocked off Guelph by a final score of 11-1, converting 11 hits into 11 runs. Leading the charge at the plate was third-year infielder Jorja Sandilands who finished the contest with two triples, two walks, one run, and four RBI. Third-year pitcher Alexa Aquanno picked up the win from the pitching circle going four innings with just one earned run conceded. Versus the Golden Hawks, Toronto shutout their opponent with a 4-0 win. Third-year pitcher Vanessa Jeffrey was sensational in the win going all seven innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just five hits and two walks.

Shifting to Sunday (Sept. 13), Toronto saw their momentum come to a halt. The Blues dropped their early morning showdown 8-1 against the Brock Badgers. Olivia Mather notched the lone RBI for the Blues. U of T then fell 9-5 to the Western Mustangs to close out the weekend in Cobourg. A much tighter contest, Western held just a one-run advantage heading into the final two innings. However, six runs scored for Western across the sixth and seventh innings proved too much for the Blues.Sandilands continued her strong weekend at the plate going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Both Tala Rennie and Zoe Goldberg also notched two hits and an RBI for U of T.

The Blues will continue the regular season with two road doubleheaders. First they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels next Saturday (Sept. 19). They then return to a familiar setting to challenge the TMU Bold in Toronto on Sunday (Sept. 20).
