The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 66-58 in overtime to the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Feb. 6) night in Waterloo, Ont.
The Blues got off to a strong start in the game, forcing seven turnovers in the first quarter while getting support from their bench, outscoring Waterloo 10-1. The Blues carried momentum into the second quarter on a 9-0 run and shot 55 per cent from the field and 60 per cent from three. In the second half, the Warriors were able to cut into Toronto's lead to force overtime. An 8-0 scoring run in the extra frame was the difference maker in the final result.
Leading the way for U of T was third-year guard Faith Joseph with a team-high 12 points on 50 per cent shooting. Joseph added a game-high six steals as the as the Mississauga native continued to be a factor on both ends of the floor. Also reaching the double-digit point plateau was third-year centre Jade-Emmanuelle Diwandja Djemba who produced a 10-point and nine rebound performance while adding a block. Second-year guard Diana Comsa added 11 points to U of T's total while shooting 44 per cent from the field and 33 per cent from beyond the three-point line.
For Waterloo, Giselle Potlete's game-high 14 points was complimented by three steals. Jamie Newell added a 12-point 10-rebound double-double while shooting 40 per cent on field goals. Yemi Oladipo and Kymora Stafford each had 10 points and six rebounds.
The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 7) night when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on
