The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team made a short trip down Yonge Street to take on the No. 3 nationally ranked TMU Bold on Wednesday (Feb 11) evening, ending the night with a hard fought 77-59 loss.
In the first frame, the Blues shot an outstanding 75 percent from three, keeping the first quarter close at just a four-point deficit. However, the nationally ranked Bold came out blazing in the second, utilizing a size advantage to outrebound the Blues 14-4 and scored 12 points in the paint. The Blues fought hard in the second half, tracking down loose ball and delivering high-effort to take back a rebound advantage of 20-12. As well, the outside shot heated back up as U of T shot 50 percent from behind the arc, and received 31 bench points in contrast to TMU's nine. Despite the push-back, outscoring the Bold by seven points in the fourth quarter, the Blues were unable to close the gap and TMU secured the win.
Toronto had three players in double figures. Leading the pack was fourth-year forward Janet Enge with 14 points and four rebounds, shooting over 80 percent from three and 57 percent from the field. Third-year forward Diana Comsa added 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals. And delivering one of her best performances in her debut season with the Blues, first-year forward Kiyomi Huestis notched 10 points and shot 60 percent from the field.
The Bold were led by Myriam Kone with 23 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Hailey Franco DeRyck was dominant on the boards with 23 rebounds, adding six points as well.
