The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the York Lions 5-1 on Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon in Toronto.
First-year goalie Eric Young made 20 saves on his way to earning his first career OUA win in his debut in the Blue and White. Meanwhile, five different Blues found the back of the net in a balanced offensive performance.Â
Toronto wasted little time making their presence felt with a goal just over three minutes into the game. With Lucas Eagle in the box for tripping, fourth-year forward Rylee Hlusiak got the Blues on the board, capitalizing on the power play with his first goal of the season. The early breakthrough set the tone for U of T as they continued to build momentum throughout the period. In the late stages of the frame, second-year forward Ryan Evenhuis continued his hot start to the season with his third goal in as many games.
The second period saw a shift in pace with neither side finding the back of the net. York looked to find a way back into the contest but a strong defensive effort and 13 stops by Young led to the 2-0 being unchanged through 40 minutes of play.
Toronto came into the third period determined to put the game out of reach. In the opening three minutes of the period, second-year forward Ryan Watt extended the lead with fourth-year defenceman Owen Luik drawing the assist. The Lions had a breakthrough when Bryan McAndrews found the back of the net as U of T once again led by two goals.
The Blues were unphased by the goal against, less than three minutes later fourth-year captain Aiden Reeves restored the three-goal lead with his first goal of the season. Adding to a milstrone afternoon, first-year forward Dustin Renas scored the first goal of his OUA career, capping off an impressive showing for the Blues.
