Legendary hockey coach Mike Keenan has been named one of nine individuals who will be inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2026.
Best known as head coach and general manger with several NHL teams, he also helped lead the Varsity Blues men's hockey team to provincial and national gold during the 1983-84 season. Keenan would orchestrate a 20-1-3 regular season for U of T, finishing atop the OUAA standings. Going 7-0 during the postseason, he would help the Blues earn their second provincial banner in three seasons and 10
th national title in program history.
Shifting to the NHL after his championship with the Varsity Blues, Keenan would coach eight different teams between 1984 to 2009. He is one of only three coaches to lead three different teams (Philadelphia, Chicago, New York) to the Stanley Cup Finals, including winning the Stanley Cup with the Rangers in 1994. He also led Team Canada to gold at the 1987 Canada Cup and won the 2014 Gagarin Cup while coaching Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He is one of only two coaches to win both the NHL and KHL championships.
Keenan was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 1983-84 team in 2014.
