The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team finished a four-game road trip against the No. 10 ranked Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Jan 24) afternoon, falling short in a 93-60 loss.
Despite shooting 55 and 67 percent from the field in the first and second, Toronto were only able to convert 19 field goals compared to 35 for the nationally ranked Lancers. Due to Windsor's trapping full-court defensive pressure, the Blues struggled to cross the half and Windsor scored 31 of their 52 first half points off Blues turnovers. U of T fought back, opening the third on a 7-0 run and outrebounding Windsor 21-19. However, they could not close the gap any further.
Toronto had three players in double figures, with fourth-year forward Janet Enge notching a team-high 13 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and perfect from behind the arc. Second-year guard Lia Barbieri poured in 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Third-year forward Diana Comsa contributed an efficient 11 points and three rebounds, also shooting 50 percent from the field. Second-year centre Zi Yang Wang pulled down 11 boards, complementing her eight points and two steals.
Leah Tate led Windsor with a game-high 22 points, eight steals, and two rebounds. Kali Grootenboer contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, and Julia Chiarot added 12 points and four rebounds.
