The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team extended their current win streak to six following a 3-1 over the TMU Bold on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House.
Set scores in the match were 25-20, 18-25, 25-13, 27-25.
Now 4-0 on home court this season, the Blues sit alone in fifth place in the OUA standings with an 8-4 overall record.
Success for the Blues on Saturday came at the service line where they were able to register 13 total service aces, compared to just five for the Bold. Six of the U of T aces came courtesy fourth-year middle Thea Ziesmann, setting a new season-high while finishing just one ace shy of her single game career best. Ziesmann would add four kills to be one of five Varsity Blues to reach double-digit points in the win.
Second-year standout Julia Liu tallied a game-high 17 points from 15 kills and two service aces, while third-year outside hitter Giulia Chimilovski added 12 kills, two aces and one solo block for 15 points. Marie Boulerice secured another 10.5 points and Olivia Zhu notched 10.
All over the court defensively, third-year libero Delaney Watson registered a season best 24 digs. Meanwhile, first-year setter Marina Gustke guided the offence with 40 assists and contributed defensively with 14 digs. Both Liu and Chimilovski also reached double-digit digs as the Blues defensive effort stood out across the four set victory.
Leading the way for TMU, Darcie Buchanan recorded a team-high 16 points from 14 kills, one ace and two block assists, while also adding 12 digs. Bold libero Livia Davenport was also a standout for the visitors with 22 digs.
