BLUES SWEEP BOLD TO EXTEND WIN STREAK TO FIVE

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team extended their win streak to five-straight games with a 3-0 win over the TMU Bold at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House on Friday (Jan. 16) night.

Set scores were: 25-18, 27-25, 25-19.

Toronto set the tone early by establishing a strong offensive rhythm and supporting their play with steady defensive coverage. After taking the opening set, the Blues weathered the storm as TMU pushed the second set into extra time but U of T kept their composure to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The third set followed a similar script to the opener as the Blues build separation and were able to capitalize on mistakes to sweep their downtown rival.

Fourth-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu led the way for the Blue and White with game-highs in points with 15 and service aces with three. Ottawa native Julia Liu led the Blues in kills with 13 and had 14 total points. Third-year outside hitter Giulia Chimilovski also reached the double-digit point plateau with 10.5 points. Defensively, fourth-year middle Thea Ziesmann had a team-high two solo blocks and Marie Boulerice and Marina Gustke each notched a solo block. Gustke went on to finish the game with a game-high 38 assists.

For TMU, Sadie Bird's 16 assists was the top passing honour for the Bold. Meanwhile Alya Cross had a game-high three solo blocks and she led the way in scoring with 9.5 points.

The Blues and Bold meet up once again at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House tomorrow (Jan. 17) afternoon. First-serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
