VARSITY BLUES CONTINUE DEFENSIVE SHOWCASE IN SHUTOUT WIN OVER NO. 10 GAELS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team maintained their undefeated start to the 2025 season with a 2-0 victory versus the No. 10 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels on Sunday (Sept. 7) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.

Toronto now sit atop the OUA East with an unblemished 3-0 record. The Blues have been buoyed by outstanding defence to open the 2025 campaign, holding opponents scoreless across all three games so far this season, while scoring six goals themselves.

"I think the priority has really been defensively since the start of the season," noted Varsity Blues women's soccer head coach Angelo Cavalluzzo. "Not to concede, be difficult to beat, and then add goals to that. I think the last few results being three two-nils is exactly what we want, so really happy with the performances."

The visiting Gaels delivered a strong opening half as they outshot the home side 8-5 through the first 45 minutes of the match. However, the trio of third-year goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash and fifth-year centre backs Hannah Chown and Bryanna Campbell were able to limit the quality of chances.

A different energy presented itself for the Blues to start the second half as hey surged forward to score the first goal of the match within the first 23 seconds of the period. Taking advantage of a loose ball in front of the Gaels keeper, a tip from second-year forward Ines Delhomelle put the bal on the foot of fifth-year forward Anne Yeomans who deposited the ball into the empty net.

Keeping up the offensive pressure, a through ball from second-year midfielder Julia Cristovao once again made its way to a streaking Yeomans who delivered a quick kick to send he ball into the bottom corner for her second goal of the game in the 56th minute. The marker was also the 15th career regular season goal in the Blue and White for he U of T engineering student.

Through the remaining 30 minutes U of T shifted back to their defensive dominance, not allowing a single Queen's shot to reach goal. Godoy-Arash would claim her third clean sheet of the season with all five of her saves coming in the first half.  Adding to the strong effort from the Blues defensively were fifth-year defenders Lindsey Barwitzki and Devon Eisen, and third-year defender Samantha Gravina. The Blues are now one of only two teams from across the entirety of the OUA to not concede a goal yet this season.

The Varsity Blues next face off with another nationally ranked opponent traveling to the nation's capital to challenge the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday, Sept. 12. Kick-off for the road contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. wih he action available to stream via oua.tv.
