The No. 8 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team defeated the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees by a final score of 2-0 on Friday (Sept. 12) night in the nation's capital.
A battle between two of the top teams in the OUA this season, the Blues were able to establish a lead early and then turn to their stifling defence to secure the road win. Not only did the victory lift Toronto's undefeated streak to 4-0 to begin the 2025 campaign, but another clean sheet effort maintained a scoreless streak for U of T opponents. The Blues are one of just two teams in the OUA yet to be scored on this season.
On the pitch, fifth-year forward Anne Yeomans proved to be too much for the home side during the early portion of the match. The U of T engineering student opened the scoring in just the sixth minute sending a hard shot past the outstretched arms of the Ottawa keeper into the top corner. She then followed that up with her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season in the 36
th minute, stabbing a toe at a loose ball in a crowd to slip it into the Gee-Gees net.
After building the two-goal lead, Toronto turned to their effective back line of fifth-year trio Hannah Chown, Bryanna Campbell, and Lindsey Barwitzki. The veteran defenders held the No. 2 team in the country to just one shot on goal through the second half of the game. Blues third-year keeper Maria Godoy-Atrash recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season, making three saves in the victory.
U of T will look to keep momentum rolling as they next begin a home-and-home series with in-city rivals TMU. The first of the back-to-back games is set to take place this Sunday, Sept. 14 at Downsview Park. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
The Blues will then host the Bold at Varsity Stadium on Friday, Sept. 19 with kick-off at 5:15 p.m.
Both games will be streamed live on
oua.tv, while tickets for the Varsity Blues home game next Friday are available for purchase at
varsityblues.ca/tickets. U of T students receive free entry to all home Varsity Blues games.
