The No. 9 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the No. 6 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.
The Blues hold a record of 6-2-1 this season and are in second-place in the OUA East with three games remaining in the regular season.
After a pregame ceremony honouring the eight graduating Blues, the two teams took the field in a high stakes U SPORTS Top 10 matchup. Toronto and Ottawa traded chances throughout the first half but third-year goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash showed why she is one of the best keepers in the country turning aside all three shots she faced. On the other end of the pitch Juliann Lacasse turned aside two high quality Blues chances as the game remained scoreless at halftime.
In the 51
st minute the Gee-Gees scored the icebreaker when forward Sabrina Mangiaracina found the back of the net. Mangiaracina's second goal of the match came in the 55
th minute, extending the deficit to two goals.
U of T's defence kept their composure after the two quick goals against, getting in front of shots and pushing the ball up the field. Toronto's attack generated scoring chances as time on the clock progressed but a strong defensive game from the Gee-Gees kept the Blues off the scoresheet after 90 minutes of play.
Godoy-Atrash finished the game with six saves.
The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon when they travel to Peterborough, Ont., to take on the Trent Excalibur. Kick off is scheduled for 12 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on
oua.tv.
