SIX GAMES IN THREE DAYS FOR BLUES SOFTBALL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team added another five wins to their season total after competing in six games across three days this weekend.

Opening their busy weekend schedule in Waterloo on Friday (Sept. 26) night, U of T collected 8-4 and 14-7 victories in a doubleheader with the Warriors.

Scoring in five of the seven innings for Game 1, the Blues were led offensively by the duo of third-year infielder Shirley Chan and second-year catcher Alexia Verches. Chan went 3-for-4 while recording an RBI, one run and a stolen base. Meanwhile, Verches delivered two RBI and a run on a 2-for-4 outing with her double marking just one of six extra-base hits by the Blues in the win. Second-year pitcher Alexa Aquanno picked up the win in the pitching circle tallying seven strikeouts while allowing just three hits and two runs across six total innings.

In Game 2, Aquanno delivered a the plate recording a four RBI and two runs on a 4-for-5 outing. A powerful offensive performance was also had by third-year pitcher Olivia Mather who went 3-for-3 with two additional walks and four RBI, and second-year utility Tala Rennie who crossed the plate three times while driving in two RBI on a 4-for-5 hitting day. Fourth-year veteran pitcher Joely Ma claimed the win with five strikeouts across five innings.

Shifting to Saturday (Sept. 27), the Blues earned a big 15-3 win and a close 3-0 victory over the TMU Bold.

In U of T's dominant Game 1 win eight different batters registered an RBI. Continuing to showcase the depth of talent, it was third-year infielder Julia Lacaria who topped the Blues with three RBI and two runs on a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, including a triple. Aquanno earned her second win of the weekend in the pitching circle after collecting another three strikeouts with just two hits and two earned runs conceded across four total innings.

In a much closer Game 2, it was the stellar pitching of second-year pitcher Vanessa Jeffrey that helped carry the Blues to a shutout win. Jeffrey was dealing in a complete seven inning effort where she allowed only three hits while striking out six Bold batters. The Blues fielding was also stellar, not committing a single error in the victory. Chan drove in what would be the winning run on a third-inning fielder's choice, while fourth-year Isabella Trakosas added an insurance marker for U of T.

The Blues closed out the busy weekend once again facing the Warriors, dropping Game 1 of the Sunday (Sept. 28) match-up 8-4, before scoring a 13-4 win in Game 2. The defeat marked the first loss of the season for Toronto who now hold a 15-1 record and sit atop the OUS East division standings.

In a close Game 1, it was a four-run seventh inning that secured the win for the Warriors. At the plate, Aquanno added another four hits while third-year outfielder Meijin Patil and first-year outfielder Kae Lin Whiton each tallied two RBI. Despite seven more strikeouts and another complete seven innings pitched, Jeffrey picked up the loss in the pitching circle.

Spending no time worrying about the early morning result, the Blues bounced right back in Game 2 accumulating 17 hits and scoring a run in six of seven innings. Third-year second base Jamie Cho went 3-for-4, plus a walk, to register three RBI and two runs. Meanwhile, Aquanno converted three hits into a game-high four RBI while Chan used three hits and three steals to get herself across home plate four times. The duo of Ma and Mather combined for the win from the pitching circle.

One more weekend remains in the OUS regular season with the Blues remaining in Toronto to face the York Lions on Saturday, Oct. 4 and Queen's Gaels on Sunday, Oct. 5. Following the regular season finale U of T will then head to Calgary for the CCSA National Championship from Oct. 10-12 before heading to Innerkip, Ont., for the OUS Championship from Oct. 17-19.
