After bouncing back from a Day 1 loss at the Ontario University Softball Championship to reach the semifinal round through the consolation bracket, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team saw their run come to an end in the final four courtesy an 11-0 loss versus the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday (Oct. 19) morning.
The Blues emerge from the 2025 season as OUS bronze medalists. Closing the door on a three-peat for the Blues softball program, the 2025 campaign was still filled wth plenty of highlights as U of T delivered on a one-loss regular season to finish atop the OUS East division standings, traveled to Calgary for the CCSA National Championship where they reached the quarter-final round, and battled back from the OUS Championship opening round loss to reach the semifinals.
U of T were in tough following the very first game of the provincial showcase, requiring five consecutive wins to reach the top step of the podium in the double elimination format tournament. The Blues were able to rattle off three wins on Saturday in order to place them into a semifinal showdown with the Golden Hawks. However, the momentum of Saturday was unable to carry over into Sunday as the Blues were held hitless in the tough five-inning defeat to Laurier.
Despite the final score, second-year pitcher Alexa Aquanno was dealing through the first four innings of the Sunday semifinal. Laurier were only able to connect on only four hits while through those four innings to hold a slim 3-0 lead. Without a solid response from the Blues offence though, the Golden Hawks were able to break through for an eight run fifth inning to pull away and claim the win. Aquanno would finish with eight strikeouts of her 26 batters faced across 4.2 innings.
