BLUES BASEBALL CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team ended their OUA regular season campaign with four wins across back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend.

With five straight victories to close out the regular season portion of their fall, the Blues head into next weekends OUA Baseball Regional Qualifiers with an 11-3 conference record and 14-6 overall record.

Beginning with a Saturday (Sept. 27) doubleheader versus the TMU Bold, U of T collected 8-2 and 11-0 victories.

Second-year pitcher and outfielder Diego Fuentes continued his stellar sophomore campaign adding a 2-for-3, one walk and one steal outing in Game 1 versus the Bold. Fuentes would be one of five Blues batters to register an RBI and one of six Blues base-runners to record a stolen base in the four-run victory. On the mound, first-year pitcher Matthew Clark picked up the win registering six strikeouts in five innings while giving up just four hits and zero runs.

In U of T's five inning shutout win for Game 2 it was fourth-year pitcher Ethan Kwong who earned the complete game victory. Kwong conceded just two his and one walk across all five innings, adding strikeouts. At the plate, fourth-year outfielder Sam Aslanowicz was on fire going 3-for-4, including a home run, with two RBI, three runs and two stolen bases for good measure.

On Sunday (Sept. 28), the Blues started their day versus the McMaster Marauders with a close 6-5 win before adding another 12-0 victory.

With the Marauders needing just one more run in the top of the seventh to draw even, fourth-year pitcher Tyson Espiritu Santo was able to force a line out to left field for the final out of the contest and save the Blues victory on their home diamond. Fifth-year pitcher Connor Broughton earned the win after completing the first four innings of work with three runs allowed and five strikeouts. Fuentes once again led the charge offensively recording three RBI, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.

Shifting to a more dominant effort in Game 2, Toronto needed just five innings as the combination of 13 hits and 11 stolen bases allowed the Blues to make quick work of the Marauders. Second-year infielder Marcus Santos recorded three RBI and three stolen bases, while Ryan Hsu added another two RBI on a 3-for-4 showing at the plate. Four different pitchers took to the mound for U of T with first-year pitcher Armin Najmaia collecting the win.

With the conclusion of the regular season, next up will be the OUA Baseball Regional Qualifiers. Further details to follow.
