NO. 9 BLUES SECURE SIXTH WIN OF THE SEASON AGAINST RMC

The No. 9 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team defeated the RMC Paladins 3-0 on Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.

The Blues improve their record to 6-1-1 this season and sit tied at the top of the table in the OUA East with 19 points.

In the first half, U of T controlled possession as the defence was able to push the ball up the field and transition to a relentless attack, testing Paladins goalkeeper Brianna West early. The Blues fired six shots on target in the half while holding the Paladins shotless in the opening 45 minutes. The Blues extra time heroics continued in added time of the first half as fifth-year defender Bryanna Campbell fired a shot into the box and off an RMC defender for an own goal to give the Blues a 1-0 lead going into the break.

In the 47th minute the Blues offence kept their strong form extending the lead to 2-0. A free kick from fifth-year defender Devon Eisen was fired into the box and the ball was pounced on by fellow fifth-year defender Lindsey Barwitzki who sent a laser of a shot into the back of the net.

Toronto's defence was strong throughout the match, not conceding a shot on goal until the 78th minute. In the 84th minute the Blues extended their lead when second-year midfielder Julia Cristovao showcased her power, firing a shot from 32 yards out over the head of West for her second goal of the season.

The Blues rounded out a complete effort in the victory as third-year goalkeeper Juliana Ottoni picked up her second straight clean sheet.

The Blues are back in action on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon in a U SPORTS Top 10 showdown against the No. 6 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees at Varsity Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 12 p.m. with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
