FOUR MORE WINS KEEPS U OF T SOFTBALL UNDEFEATED

Competing in back-to-back road doubleheaders this past weekend, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team maintained their undefeated streak with four total wins.

Opening the weekend in Kingston on Saturday (Sept. 20), the Blues knocked off the Queen's Gaels 14-2 and 12-5.

In Game 1 versus Queen's it was a 13-run third inning that secured the win for U of T. Second-year infielder and pitcher Alexa Aquanno was outstanding in the win converting a triple and single into five RBI and two runs. Meanwhile, in the pitching circle second-year pitcher Vanessa Jeffrey collected the win after striking out five Gaels across three innings, while conceding just two hits.

In a much tougher Game 2, the home side Gaels carried a 5-4 advantage into the third inning. However, a six run explosion from the Blues created a gap that Queen's would be unable to close. Third-year infielder Shirley Chan led the way going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Jeffrey collected her second win of the day with another five strikeout performance across 3.2 innings.

Traveling further down the highway to the nation's capital, Toronto earned 10-8 and 11-10 wins over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday (Sept. 21).

Leading the Gee-Gees 6-5 heading into the top of the fifth, U of T added another four runs to establish enough of an advantage to hold off any Ottawa comeback. Third-year pitcher and outfielder Olivia Mather delivered a prefect performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double and triple en route to one RBI and two runs. Mather and Aquanno combined in the pitching circle for the win, with the latter posting an impressive single-game high seven strikeouts this weekend.

Then in an even closer Game 2 which saw the two teams tied 10-10 heading into the final inning, second-year infielder Tala Rennie walked off the victory with a timely single in the bottom of the seventh. Rennie finished the contest 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run, while Chan also added another three hit performance scoring three RBI and crossing the plate twice. Fourth-year pitcher Joely Ma earned the win in relief, recording three strikeouts and allowing just two hits in two innings of work.

Now 10-0 on the season, U of T lead the OUS East division, holding a plus-61 run differential. The Blues will look to keep rolling as they next travel to face the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Sept. 26) night, before hosting the TMU Bold on Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon.
