The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team added another two wins to their season total after defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs 11-1 and 12-0 on Sunday (Sept. 13) afternoon in Sudbury.
With the two wins, the Blues pushed their regular season record to 5-2. Following the Sunday doubleheader, U of T holds a plus-27 run differential having scored 52 runs to just 25 runs conceded through their first seven games.
On the diamond it was a six-run fifth inning that spurred the Blues on to victory in Game 1. Second-year third baseman Marcus Santos led the charge with a game-high three RBI, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Benefitting from the timely bat of Santos was fourth-year left fielder Kirk Gibson who crossed the plate three times in the win, placing himself into scoring position via two stolen bases and an extra-base hit. On the mound, the duo of Patrick Stasyszyn and Connor Broughton combined for eight strikeouts and just five hits allowed across three innings each.
For Game 2, it was four different pitchers who took to the mound to earn the shutout for U of T. Allowing zero runs and just two hits through five innings, the combination of Ethan Kwong, Matthew Clarke, Tyson Espiritu Santo, and Diego Fuentes held the Voyageurs scoreless. Seven different Blues batters recorded an RBI in the dominant win, led by two RBI outings for both Fuentes and Spenser Ross.
Following the long road trip North the Blues will return to Dan Lang Field for a doubleheader versus the Queen's Gaels on Saturday, Sept. 20. First pitch for the home matchup is set for 11 a.m. Toronto will then face-off with York on Sunday, Sept. 21 to close out a four-game weekend.
