University of Toronto Varsity Blues football defensive coordinator Bob Mullen announced his retirement, effective July 30, bringing to close a football career spanning over 50 years.
"Bob has had a tremendous and everlasting impact on the Varsity Blues football family," said Varsity Blues head coach Darrell Adams. "Being a first-time head coach in 2024, Mully was integral in my assimilation into U of T. Known for his dry humor as evidenced by his perfectly timed one-liners, Bob helped me grow as a coach, leader, mentor and, most importantly, a person. His knowledge, passion and expertise was needed, appreciated and will be sorely missed.  I wish all the best to Coach Mullen and his family as he enters the next phase of his life."
Mullen joined the Varsity Blues coaching staff in 2017 as defensive coordinator. During his eight seasons at the helm of the U of T defence, Toronto made incredible improvements, highlighted by a 2021 campaign which saw the Blues achieve a .500 regular season record for the first time since 2013 and a postseason appearance for the first time since 1995. That fall, Mullen's defence ranked in the Top 5 in the province in points allowed and turnovers, while adding 11 sacks and two defensive touchdowns for good measure. U of T would go on to make back-to-back playoff runs, reaching the OUA quarter-finals in 2022 as well.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues family," said Mullen. "I give thanks for the friendship and support of our administration, fellow coaches, alumni, parents and friends of Varsity Blues football. Above all, I thank the student-athletes, our players, for their hard work and unwavering commitment to the program. I will cherish the relationships built and time shared. I remain excited for the future! GO BLUES!"
Prior to joining the Blues, Mullen served as defensive coordinator for four seasons with the StFX X-Men, helping guide the team to back-to-back AUS championship titles in 2015 and 2016. Additionally, he earned Vanier Cup victories as both a player and coach with Queen's University. Mullen served as the Gaels defensive coordinator from 1988-00, helping the team to four Yates Cup titles and the only shutout in Vanier Cup history in 1992, defeating Saint Mary's 31-0. He was awarded the CIS Gino Fracas Award as outstanding volunteer assistant coach in 1993, received induction into the Queen's University coaches hall of fame in 2003, and was inducted into the Queen's football hall of fame as a builder in 2012. As a player with the Gaels, Mullen played quarterback and defensive back, where he was a member of Queen's 1978 Vanier Cup championship team.
