The University of Toronto Varsity Blues added another seven podiums on the third and final day of the 2025 U SPORTS Swimming National Championships, hosting the best-of-the-best inside the Athletic Centre - Varsity Pool for the three-day national showcase.
Across the full three days of the championship, U of T men earned 17 total medals, allowing them to finish in second-place in the overall team standings with 1078 points, behind national champions UBC who took first with 1305.5 points.
On the women's side, the Varsity Blues maintained fourth-place throughout the week, finishing with seven total medals and 708 team points. In a dominating week, the UBC women also captured the national banner with 1472 points scored.
MEN'S RESULTS
The U of T men tallied three silver medals and one bronze medal to end the 2025 U SPORTS championships on Saturday night.
To kick off the day the Varsity Blues men picked up two medals in the 200m butterfly. Ben Loewen won his second straight silver medal in the event finishing with a time of 1:54.46. Although Loewen's time was fast enough to beat the former U SPORTS record (1:54.56), the new record was set by gold medal winner from UBC, Finlay Knox. Bill Dongfang also added a bronze for the Varsity Blues in the event finishing with a time of 1:56.26 to claim his second medal of the meet.
Loewen earned another silver medal in the 200m backstroke, which was a race that came down to tenths of a second. Loewen touched in at 1:55.37 for his third medal, just ahead of McGill's LoÏc Courville-Fortin who swam 1:55.49.
The final race of the 2025 U SPORTS Championships saw the Varsity Blues men claim yet another spot on the podium. A silver medal swim from Andrew Herman, Nathan Thomas, Loewen, and Albert Bouley closed out the meet in a time of 3:31.82.
Thomas would go on to be awarded as the 2025 U SPORTS rookie of the year following his impressive first season. The OUA men's rookie of the year added to his first-year medal haul, scoring national silver in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, before also grabbing the relay silver on the final day of competition.
"It's been really electric, really special, and really nerve-racking," said Thomas as of the experience at his first U SPORTS championships. "University of Toronto has a long history of breaststrokers so I felt like I had big shoes to step in. I broke two big barriers with one minute in the 100 breast and 2:10 in the 200 breast, and I'm just glad I was able to do that and show everyone that we are still a very strong breaststroke program."
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Nina Mollin secured her third gold medal of the weekend posting a time of 2:13.29 in the 200m butterfly. The OUA swimmer of the year put on an incredible performance this weekend as she defended all three of her gold medals from the previous U SPORTS Championships, winning once again the 100m and 200m butterfly, and 200m IM.
For her first ever U SPORTS medal, Angelica Bath took home a silver medal in the 200M backstroke. Bath swam a time of 2:12.27, cementing her position on the podium.
Bath, Tina Guan, Mollin, and Teagan Vander Leek earned the Toronto women's final medal in the 4x100m medley relay. Shaving off six seconds from their OUA winning time, the Blues won a bronze medal with a time of 4:06.99 on Saturday night.
