The University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming team earned a U SPORTS silver medal at the 2026 U SPORTS Swimming Championships at the Markham Pan Am Centre. U of T's men's team finished with 935.5 points and the women finishing with 1029 points. Overall, U of T earned 24 medals, six of which were gold medals.
"We're extremely proud to earn a U SPORTS silver medal," said head coach Byron MacDonald. "This was certainly a goal from our first team meeting in September so it's great to see it work out!"
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Kicking off the day for the Varsity Blues was a podium sweep in the women's 200m butterfly. Fourth-year standout Nina Mollin earned her 10
th career U SPORTS gold medal with a dominant performance, finishing the race in 2:11.96. Finishing with the silver medal was second-year Richmond, B.C., native Angel Yao who touched the wall in 2:14.34 and third-year kinesiology student Katie Stanojlovic finished the race in 2:15.21 to claim the bronze.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team, especially our rookies; they've had outstanding performances" said Mollin. "I ended the meet how I wanted to, it's been a roller coaster but I couldn't ask for a better group of teammates, they've been so supportive and have made my time in Toronto great."
U of T's women's swimmers would later go on to add two more medals to their total. In the 100m freestyle, fourth-year Edmonton native Teagan Vander Leek finished the race in 54.59 seconds to claim her third U SPORTS bronze medal of the weekend. Vander Leek and Mollin later went on to add another bronze medal to their resume's along with first-year standout's Chloe Danks and Maria Cosic with a time of 4:02.22 in the 4x100m medley.
U of T's women's team returns to U SPORTS podium for the first time since 2024. Strong performances from their first-year swimmers and continued success from their veteran staples ended up being the key to the Blue and White's success in their return to the podium.
MEN'S RESULTS
On the men's side, U of T continued to shine on the national stage. Fourth-year kinesiology student Andrew Herman excellent in the pool for the Blues, earning himself U SPORTS Swimmer of the Year honours.
"Andrew's progress since enrolling at U of T is the stuff of legends," said MacDonald. "His work ethic is off the charts. It's a pleasure to coach him."
Herman added a silver medal to his accolades on Day 3 as the quartet of himself, Ben Loewen, Nathan Thomas and Ben Winterborn earned a silver medal in their U of T record setting performance, going the distance in 3:29.54. Loewen also broke a U SPORTS record in the men's 200m butterfly, with his second gold medal of the weekend, he set the standard for future 200m butterfly events, he swam the race in 1:53.22. In the same event, U of T's Bill Dongfang earned the silver medal with a time of 1:56.16 to earn his first medal of the 2026 U SPORTS Swimming Championships.
