CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: U SPORTS SWIMMING

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues will serve as host for the 2025 U SPORTS Swimming National Championships, welcoming the best from across the country to the Athletic Centre – Varsity Pool from Mar. 6-8.

After claiming their 21st consecutive OUA title, the No. 2 nationally ranked Varsity Blues men's team will be vying for an equal 21st U SPORTS championship in program history, and second straight national banner after claiming the overall title a year ago. Meanwhile, the No. 3 Toronto women enter the national showcase as three-time defending U SPORTS champions, with aspirations of adding an 19th national title to the rafters for the women at U of T.

All sessions are streamed live in English on CBC GEM, CBC Sports Youtube, and cbcsports.ca  and in French on Radio-Canada.ca/Sports and ICI Tou.TV, while live results are available here.

WOMEN'S PREVIEW: The Varsity Blues women will be led by third-year medley specialist and 2025 OUA Female Swimmer of the Year Nina Mollin. The versatile swimmer earned four individual gold medals at the provincial championships this season, including wins in both the 200m and 400m IM events, garnering the OUA's Dr. Jeno Tehani Individual Medley Award for a third consecutive season. With plenty of experience on the national stage, Mollin has contributed in both of the two U SPORTS national championship victories for the Blues over the past two seasons, claiming eight medals between the two showcases, including four individual U SPORTS gold medals.

Another third-year standout, Teagan Vander Leek will be leaned on in the freestyle races. The sprint specialist earned OUA gold in both the 50m and 100m freestyle races at the provincial championship, while also contributing in both the 4x50m and 4x100m freestyle relay wins for the Blues. Vander Leek is in pursuit of a first U SPORTS individual gold medal, previously placing fourth in the 50m freestyle race in 2024 and fifth in 2023. She does own two relay gold medals already as a contributor to the Blues 4x100m freestyle victories in both 2024 and 2023.

Continuing the showcase of third-year talent, freestyle distance specialist Katie Marovino has produced her best season yet. Entering her third appearance at the U SPORTS national championships, the Toronto native has delivered exceptional swim after exceptional swim throughout this 2024-25 campaign. At the OUA Stratten Divisional Championship in the fall she earned gold in the 200m, 400m, and 800m freestyle races, while also earning bronze in the 200m butterfly. Then at the 2025 OUA Swimming Championships she added three individual provincial gold medals to her season tally, also winning the 200m, 400m, and 800m freestyle events, including an impressive eight second victory in the longest distance.

Despite a large graduating class from the national championship a year ago, the depth of talent remains within the ranks. This includes fourth-year backstroke specialist Angelica Bath, fourth-year breaststroker Tina Guan, and fourth-year freestyler and backstroker Gemma Norman.

MEN'S PREVIEW:  For the Blues men, a strong combination of newcomers and returners will be led by 2025 OUA Men's Swimmer of the Year Ben Loewen. The third-year multi-stroke standout has established himself as one of the very best, not only in the OUA conference, but in the nation. After earning four U SPORTS medals at the national showcase a year ago, helping the Blues to the 2024 banner, Loewen has continued to improve even further. At the 2025 OUA Swimming Championships he added another five provincial gold medals to his career haul, while also setting new OUA record times in the 200m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, and with his teammates in the 4x100m medley relay.

Another standout for the Varsity Blues, fourth-year medley specialist Jacob Gallant will be aiming to achieve one of the toughest milestones in collegiate swimming, the Grand Slam. Gallant enters the national championship as the three-time defending champion in the 400m medley, setting up the rare opportunity of winning the same event in four years of one's collegiate career. Claiming the OUA's Dr. Jeno Tihanyi Individual Medley Excellence Award for a third straight year at the 2025 OUA Swimming Championships, Gallant remains in fine form to accomplish the national milestone in front of a home team crowd at U of T's Athletic Centre – Varsity Pool.

A team filled with incredbile talent, additional high-profile returners from the Toronto men's 2024 national championship team include U SPORTS 200m butterfly record-holder Bill Dongfang, U SPORTS 50m backstroke record-holder Andrew Herman, and 2024 50m freestyle champion Liam Weaver. The team this year is then also elevated by first-year standouts Albert Bouley, Ben Winterborn, and 2025 OUA men's rookie of the year Nathan Thomas. All three contributed in the Blues 21st consecutive OUA provincial title vicotry this season, while being part of setting new OUA record times in both the 4x100m medley relay and 4x50m medley relay.
