SWIMMING SWEEPS OUA TITLES FOR 11TH STRAIGHT YEAR

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues once again swept the provincial banners with both the men's and women's teams claiming the overall titles at the 2025 OUA Swimming Championships.

The victory marked the 21st consecutive provincial title for the Toronto men and 71st overall in program history. Meanwhile, the U of T women claimed their 11th straight OUA banner and 35th in program history.

The Blues men finished with 992.5 points, well ahead of the silver-medalist Western Mustangs (618.5) and bronze-medalist McMaster Marauders (494.5). U of T's women amassed 857 points to win the title, also ahead of Western (719) and McMaster (560).

"I'm very proud of the women's team because this was a very tough year coming off the graduation of over 50% of our championship team from last year," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald, who was named the co-men's coach of the year.  "After winning the national title three years in a row, it's hard to be in a rebuilding phase. But the whole group stepped into the fire and did what was needed to be done to bring it home."

HARDWARE:

Third-year standout Ben Loewen was named the 2025 OUA men's swimmer of the year. The third-year commerce major from Toronto won four individual gold medals, three of which came in OUA record time, while also helping the Blues to an OUA record victory in the 400 medley relay.

Loewen set OUA records in the 100 butterfly (52.41), 200 butterfly (1:55.54) and 100 backstroke (52.86), while also winning the 200 backstroke title (1:55.40). He then swam the butterfly-leg of U of T's OUA record-setting 400 medley relay victory (3:36.39).

"Talent only takes you so far and the rest is hard work and Ben has moved to that level of work where the milestones are coming fast and furious," said MacDonald. "From a rookie year when he was sick most of the year, Ben has continually upped his work ethic and moved the bar towards international status. He has already earned a berth to represent Canada at the world student games in Germany this summer."

Fellow third-year swimming sensation Nina Mollin was named the 2025 OUA women's swimmer of the year. Hailing from Schaumburg, Illinois, Mollin also won four individual and one relay gold in leading the Blues to victory.

Mollin swept the individual medley events, winning both the 200-metre (2:13.99) and 400-metre (4:44.60) races, while also earning the top spot in the 200 butterfly (2:12.39) and 200 breaststroke (2:32.34). She also helped the Blues to victory in the 400 freestyle relay on Day 3.

"Nina was a high priority recruit a few years ago and she has certainly lived up to our ranking of her potential," added MacDonald. "She dominated this weekend and continues to impress."

MEN'S RESULTS:
Third-year standout Ben Loewen continued his winning ways on Day 3, setting his third individual OUA record with a win in the 200 butterfly (1:55.54), while claiming his fourth individual title of the meet in the 200 backstroke (1:55.40). Bill Dongfang earned the silver medal in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.08, while Carter Buck was second in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.43).

Fellow third-year Varsity Blues Quinn Matteis reclaimed his 1500 freestyle title, touching the wall in 15:31.52. The Chatham, Ont., native previously won both the OUA and U SPORTS titles in the event in 2023.

Toronto's men set OUA records in both relays on Day 3. Andrew Herman, Nathan Thomas, Aiden Harris and Liam Weaver opened the night with a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:38.13, while Dongfang, Ben Winterborn, Buck and Albert Bouley capped off the meet with an OUA record win in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:17.26.

WOMEN'S RESULTS:
Nina Mollin kicked off the night with a fourth OUA individual title of the meet, winning her third career 200 butterfly gold medal in 2:12.39. Sydney Stewart (2:16.13) and Angel Yao (2:16.22) completed the U of T sweep of the podium.

Teagan Vander Leek solidified her dominance in the sprints, winning her second OUA gold medal of the meet in the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.09. Vander Leek won the 50-metre event on Day 2 as well.

Angelica Bath completed her medal tally in the backstroke events. After claiming a bronze in the 50-metre and silver in the 100-metre, Bath earned the top spot in the 200-metre backstroke, touching the wall in 2:11.32 to win gold – her first career OUA individual title.
