BLUES ADD TO OVERALL TEAM LEAD AT OUA CHAMPIOPNSHIPS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's and men's swimming teams continued to hold their leads at the conclusion of the second day of competition at the 2025 OUA Swimming Championships.

Following a full Saturday (Feb. 8) of races at the Markham Pan Am Centre, the U of T women added to their advantage with a two-day total of 564 points scored, placing them ahead of Western (470) and championships host McMaster (413). In total, the Blues women earned another 10 medals, including two podium sweeps in the 200m breaststroke and 200m medley.

Meanwhile, the Toronto men maintained their triple-digit advantage now claiming 670.5 total team points, keeping them well ahead of Western (442.5) and McMaster (314.5). U of T men collected another 12 medals, adding to the 10 won on Day 1 of the provincial championship.

"Yes, we are in the driver's seat for the team title but there is work to be done tomorrow morning in the prelims to put this baby away," said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald. "We had a bunch of best times, the atmosphere is great, and it all together spurred the swimmers to swim even faster with each race."

Highlighting the day for the Toronto women was 2024 T-Holders Athlete of the Year Nina Mollin, who captured a second and third individual OUA gold medal this weekend. Mollin claimed the top spot in both the 200m breaststroke (2:32.34) and 200m medley (2:13.99), adding to her 400m medley win on Friday. Mollin was joined by her teammates in both races on Saturday as Tina Guan and Sydney Winokur placed second and third in the breaststroke, while Sydney Stewart and Teagan Vander Leek took silver and bronze in the medley, completing two podium sweeps. Additional golds for Toronto were won by Vander Leek in the 50m freestyle (25.40) and Katie Marovino in the 400m freestyle.

On the men's side of the draw, third-year Blue Ben Loewen raced to a third OUA record time, setting a new provincial best of 52.86 in the 100m backstroke. Previously on Day 1, Loewen also set a new OUA record times in the 100m butterfly and alongside his teammates in the 4x100m medley relay. Toronto continued their dominance in the backstroke overall with the men also sweeping that podium as Ben Winterborn and Andrew Herman joined Loewen for the complete 1-2-3 finish. Also adding gold for the Blues, Liam Weaver won the 50m freestyle (22.15), Nathan Thomas the 200m breaststroke (2:10.80), and the crew of Brendan Oswald, Quinn Matteis, Mateusz Powalowski and Bill Dongfang won the 4x200m freestyle relay (7:23.14).

The 2025 OUA Swimming Championships will conclude on Sunday (Feb. 9) with another full day of races. Prelims begin at 9 a.m., followed by finals at 4 p.m. All the action can be watch online at oua.tv.
