Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

BLUES FALL TO WARRIORS IN CLOSE LOSS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team lost 2-1 against the Waterloo Warriors in their Friday (Feb. 7) evening game at Varsity Arena.

Coming off a satisfying school day win the day before, the Blues were revving with energy and they dominated in the first period, managing countless scoring opportunities, but they were unable to get the lucky bounce past Waterloo goaltender Matt Onuska. At the other end, the Blues held off the Warriors on a crucial 5-on-3 penalty kill in the final minutes of the frame, but Blues goalie Rayce Ramsay stood tall, keeping the game scoreless.

The 5-on-3 disadvantage continued going into the second period, where Waterloo managed to beat Ramsay on a backdoor goal by Simon Rose. Despite the 1-0 lead put up by Waterloo, Toronto remained determined and raised their shot count to 30. Rayce Ramsay continued to put up a persistent effort, making fantastic saves to keep the Blues in the game as they went into the third trailing by one.

Looking to get on the board, Toronto pressed hard, concluding the game with an astounding 42 shots on goal. Waterloo's Onuska continued to put up a strong effort against the undeterred Blues offence. At the halfway mark, Waterloo grabbed their second goal on a power play as Rose tipped in a shot from the blue line. In the final minutes of the game, it looked like Toronto wouldn't be able to get past Waterloo's wall in net. However, their hard work paid off when a cross ice pass from Mark Cooper found Sean Clarke, who ripped a shot top corner. The Blues pulled Ramsay to create a 6-on-5 advantage, but they couldn't quite the finish they needed, and the game ended at 2-1.

This is puts the Blues record at 16-11 ont he season. The Blues will be back at Varsity Arena on Saturday, Feb. 16 against the No. 3 Concordia Stingers. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tickets are free for students and available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, and the game can be streamed online via oua.tv.
