MEDEL EARNS 100TH WIN AS BLUES STUN NO. 7 CONCORDIA

Box Score

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won a back-and-forth 6-5 matchup in overtime against the No. 7 nationally ranked Concordia Stingers in their Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon game at Varsity Arena as they celebrated senior night.

This win marks Blues men's hockey head coach Ryan Medel's 100th of his OUA regular season head coaching career with the Blues. The 2019-20 OUA West and U SPORTS coach of the year winner, Medel has been the bench boss since the 2017-18 season after previously serving as an assistant for the Carleton Ravens.

In their last game of the regular season , the Blues were eager to grab another two points to secure their position in the OUA standings. Midway through the opening frame, Billy Moskal picked up a pass from Nicholas Wong and went down the wing to fire a far side shot, beating Concordia goaltender Nikolas Hurtubise. Concordia quickly tied the game on a goal by Simon Lavigne. Undeterred, Nicholas Athanasakos and Jacob King executed a flawless 2-on-1 play, exchanging quick passes before King slid the puck into an open net. Minutes later, Nicholas Wong extended the Blues lead with a tip in the high slot, leaving Hurtubise no chance to react. However, Concordia capitalized on a defensive lapse in the final 30 seconds of the period, with Alexandre Nadeau scoring to end the first frame at 3-2.

The Blues fought to keep their advantage, but Concordia tied the game halfway through the middle frame with a shot from Alexander Gaudio that beat Blues goalie Jordan Fairlie on a screen. The Blues had countless opportunities to regain the lead, but Hurtubise shut the Blues down with countless key saves. Momentum shifted in the Stingers favour as the period wore on and a Blue penalty late in the frame proved costly as Gaudio netted his second goal of the game on the power play to give Concordia their first lead of the night.

After Concordia made it 5-3 on a goal by Isiah Campbell, the Blues came alive in the third period in an attempt to tie the game up. A motivated Nathaniel Davis unleashed a rocket from the point to grab his first goal of the season and put the Blues back within one. In the last two minutes of the game, the Blues pulled Fairlie to put an extra attacker on the ice with hopes of forcing overtime. With 17.8 seconds left, Billy Moskal found an opening through Concordia's defence to rifle a shot past Hurtubise, tying the game at five to force the extra frame.

Overtime put the crowd on the edge of their seats as Concordia and Toronto traded chances. Just under three minutes in, Dylan Wightman grabbed the puck outside the blue line and made a dash for the net. His shot off the rush beat Hurtubise on the inside of the post, giving the Blues the win against the No. 7 ranked Stingers.

This win puts the Blues record at 17-11, giving them sole possession of second place in the OUA West Division. This gives them a bye in the opening round of the playoffs, and they will play in the OUA quarter-finals on Feb. 26-Mar. 2, with their opponent yet to be determined.
