Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

TORONTO TAKES DOWN NO. 10 TMU

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 4-2 against No. 10 nationally ranked the TMU Bold in their Thursday, Feb. 6 school day game.

Back on home ice and with a roaring crowd ready to cheer them on in the stands, the Blues scored the game's opening goal in the first three minutes. Dylan Wightman grabbed a loose puck at the top of the circle and threw a backhand shot on the net. TMU was quick to respond on a power play on a tip from Ian Martin found the net, beating Blues goaltender Jordan Fairlie to tie the game.

The second period was a hard-fought battle, with both teams racking up 30 penalty minutes. The Blues were able to capitalize on the chaos when on a five minute power play Julian Recine rushed down the wing in TMU's zone and fired a shot top corner to beat Bold goalie Kai Edmonds over his shoulder. With just three seconds left, Billy Moskal buried a rebound in front of the net off of a faceoff, doubling the Blues lead to close the period.

In the final 20 minutes of the game Toronto battled to keep the game at a two goal lead, but TMU broke through with a goal from William Portokalis to bring the game to within one. TMU pulled their goalie in the final minutes, but were turned aside as Toronto displayed a strong show of defensive play. Owen Robinson iced the game by sending a backhand shot down the ice to score on the empty net.

This win puts the Blues back in first place in the OUA Western Conference with a record of 16-10. With ust three games left until the playoffs, the Blues will be looking to tally more wins and add to their lead.

U of T's next game will be Friday, Feb. 7 against the Waterloo Warriors, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at Varsity Arena. Tickets are free for students and available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, and the game can be streamed online via oua.tv.
