TORONTO SECURES DAY 2 WIN OVER CAPE BRETON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team advanced to the U SPORTS championship consolation final following a 5-0 victory over the Cape Breton Capers on Friday (Nov. 7) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.

U of T were able to dominate possession throughout the 90 minute contest. This resulted in an early goal for the Varsity Blues as Andrea Schifano tipped in a pass from Niklas Hallam for the first marker of the game in the 16th minute.

Momentum would remain with the home-side as a poor pass back from a Capers defender forced the Cape Breton keeper to pick up the ball early under pressure from U of T forward Gianluca Scurti. The touch outside the 18-yard box stopped the Blues scoring chance but resulted in a red card for the Capers keeper putting the visitors down a man for the remainder of the match.

Varsity Blues pressure continued into the second half as Toronto raised their total shots on goal tally for the match to 14. Meanwhile, Cape Breton spent little time in the U of T end of the pitch finishing the match with just a single shot on goal.

In the 54th minute, Scurti would make good with a back-heel goal following a rebound. Hallam notched another for Toronto in the 72nd minute, being first to a long ball before chipping it around a Capers defender and depositing into the lower corner. Scurti added a second goal to his day in the 74th minute, while Jacob Prested rounded out the U of T goal scorers with an 84th minute effort.

Hallam would be named U of T player of the match and touched on having the opportunity to play another game at the championship following the consolation semifinal victory.

"It means a lot, we're trying to win so another game, another win," said Hallam. "We are 100 per cent in and not letting our foot off the gas here."

U of T will compete in the U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship consolation final tomorrow (Nov. 8) evening, challenging the UBC Thunderbirds for a fifth-place finish at the national showcase. Kick-off from Varsity Stadium is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tickets for all matches of the U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, while games are streamed online via CBC Sports.
