The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 68-57 to the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday (Nov. 29) afternoon at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House.
The Blues fell to a nine-point deficit after the first quarter. Despite the fast start from Laurentian, U of T was able to keep the game within arms reach with tight second and their quarters. A late surge from the Blue and White saw them hit multiple clutch three-pointers as the outscored the opposition 23-14 in the final frame. Despite the late push, with wasn't enough take the lead before the final buzzer. U of T's shooting was strong all game, shooting 38 per cent from the field and 41 per cent from three. The bench shined, outscoring Laurentian 21-17.
Leading the way offensively for Toronto was second-year guard Lia Barbieri who notched four team-highs with 15 points with six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Fourth-year guard Janet Enge also reached the double-digit point plateau with 11 while adding three rebounds and two assists. Off the bench, first-year forward Kiyomi Huestis had five points in nine minutes of action and was perfect from the field.
For Laurentian, Claudia Pellerin notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Emilie Lafond had a game-high 19 points and was supported by Molly Adams and Audrey-Anne Labreche who both had 17 points.
After the winter break, the Blues will resume play on Friday (Jan. 9) night when they host the York Lions at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m., with tickets available at
