The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 2-1 on Friday (Nov. 28) night at Varsity Arena.
U of T established control from the moment the puck was dropped, breaking the ice 46 seconds into the game as fourth-year forward Kaitlyn McKnight received a breakout pass from fellow fourth-year forward Emma Elders and drove home a rebound on two-on-one scoring chances with first-year forward Petra Klimes. The McKnight, Klimes and Elders line continued their strong start, midway through the period as a relentless effort in pursuit of the puck by Elders and Klimes was followed up by the Blues captain winning a net-front battle and picking her spot to double the Blues advantage with her second goal of the game.
In the second period, Toronto continued to dictate the pace of play, peppering the Lancers with sustained offensive pressure. A strong backcheck from first-year defender Olivia Brassard saw the Thunder Bay native break up a strong chance. Meanwhile, first-year goaltender Jillian Matthews made key saves to keep the 2-0 score unchanged going into the third period.
In the final frame, Windsor struck back with an early goal from Bryn Rutledge. In a fast-paced and back-and-forth period, the Blues continued to generate pressure in the offensive zone, despite the goal against. At the other end of the ice, Matthews slowed the play down and made some of the best of her 26 saves in the game. A final push from the Lancers saw the Blue and White hold the fort and break up plays before clearing the puck to secure their second straight win.
The Blues will wrap up the fall portion of the 2025-26 season on Saturday (Nov. 29) night when they travel to the north end of Toronto to take on the York Lions. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game can be streamed live on
