The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-1 on Friday (Nov. 21) night in Waterloo.
The Blues wasted no time to begin the game as third-year forward Brandon Santa Juana notched his second goal in as many games 82 seconds in. Santa Juana pounced on a puck sent his way from first-year forward Ryan Evenhuis. The early momentum stayed in U of T's favour going into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second period, second-year forward Sean Clarke set up third-year forward Christian Stevens for his second goal of the season to double the Blue and White's lead. As the period progressed a strong Blues penalty kill stood tall as they held Laurier's power play scoreless all game. Meanwhile, first-year goalie Nick Surzycia was strong between the pipes, making some of the best of his 26 saves in the game.
In the third period, Clarke added his name to the scoresheet once again, this time with a goal as less than three minutes into the frame, the Blues jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Ethan Szabo answered back for the Golden Hawks cut the lead to two goals but Surzycia shined in net and the Blues defensive core kept their composure as they neutralized a third period push to hold on an improved their road record to 5-0-1 this season.
The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon as they'll remain in Waterloo to take on the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on
