BLUES FALL TO WARRIORS ON THE ROAD

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 6-4 to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Nov. 22) afternoon in Waterloo.

Toronto entered the matchup with strong pace and clean puck movement, generating early offensive zone chances. Despite the strong start, Waterloo's Jaden Goldie opened the scoring. The Blues weren't set back by the goal as second-year forward Sean Clarke danced around goaltender Dan Murphy for his second goal in as many games. The Blues took the lead when third-year forward Rylee Hlusiak fired a shot past Murphy's blocker for his seventh goal of the season. The Warriors managed to even the score before intermission as Cory Jewitt capped off a span of three goals in less than a minute.

Toronto came out fast in the second period, reclaiming the lead as captain Mark Cooper fired a shot from the point while Clarke and fourth-year forward Zack Smith drew assists on the play. The Warriors responded with two late goals from Hayden Reyers and Jaxon Murray to reclaim the lead going into intermission.

In the final frame, the Blues continued to generated chances and were rewarded as Cooper notched his second goal of the game, finishing off a feed from fourth-year forward Eddie Yan to draw the game even. With less than five minutes remaining a power play goal from Emmett Pierce put the Warriors ahead by one-goal. Despite a late push from the Blues in pursuit of an equalizer, Murray scored an empty net goal to win the game for Waterloo.

First-year goalie Nick Surzycia made 25 saves for the Blues.

The Blues will wrap up the fall semester when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday (Nov. 29) night at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. U of T students receive free entry with a valid T-Card. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
