SWIMMING CLAIMS VICTORY OVER MCGILL IN DUAL MEET

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams defeated McGill University in dual-meet action on Sunday (Nov. 16) afternoon at the Athletic Centre - Varsity Pool.

On the men's side, the No. 2 nationally-ranked Blues claimed an 82-62 win over the No. 4 ranked McGill Redbirds. Meanwhile, the No. 4 ranked Varsity Blues women's swimming team secured a 79-64 win over the No. 2 Martlets.

"This is a great rivalry," said head coach Byron MacDonald. "We are so evenly matched and it's always an exciting contest that our swimmers and coaches look forward to."

Looking to avenge last seasons loss to McGill, U of T's women's swim team was neck-and-neck with their counter parts, holding an early 28-27 lead. The Blues fired off three-straight first and second place finishes. In the women's 100m freestyle, fourth-year veterans Teagan Vander Leek and Gemma Norman began the stretch of top-two U of T finishes.

First-year standouts Julie Nolan-McCarthy and Chloe Danks followed up the performance in the 200m breaststroke and fourth-year standout Nina Mollin and Angel Yao capped off Toronto's run in the 200m butterfly. With the run, The Blues jumped out to a 16-point lead and a well-balanced attack propelled them to them to victory. Vander Leek was at the top of the podium is two races, also claiming victory in the 50m freestyle.

For McGill, Emilia Mastromatteo had a pair of top-podium finishes and their relay team of Mastromatteo, Rebecca McGrath, Emilie de Chazal and Harper Lipton won the 400m medley relay.

On the men's side, fourth-year veteran Andrew Herman won both the 200m backstroke and 50m backstroke. The Redondo Beach, California native's strong swimming was a factor in the Blues being in control of the meet from the first race. A trio of veteran swimmers in Quinn Matteis (400m freestyle), Ben Loewen (200m butterfly) and Liam Weaver (50m freestyle) and sophomores Ben Winterborn (100m freestyle) and Nathan Thomas (200m breaststroke) all notched first-place finishes.

Up next, the Blues will turn their attention to the Stratten Division Championships between the top-four teams in the OUA on Saturday (Nov. 22) and Sunday (Nov. 23) in St. Catharines, Ont.
