The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon in Waterloo.
Set scores were: 23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 21-25.
In a tight first set the Blues overcame a five-point deficit and traded blows in a 22-22 match before Waterloo managed to gain a slight edge. U of T rebounded in the second set with an efficient attack. Despite the rallying effort, Waterloo as Waterloo took the final two sets. Overall, the Blues notched two solo blocks and had a .526 hitting percentage in their victorious second set.
Leading the way for the Blues was fourth-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu who had a game-high 16 points with 14 kills. First-year setter Marina Gustke facilitated the offence with 27 assists. Meanwhile, fourth-year middle Thea Ziesmann led the Blues in serving with three service aces. On the defensive side, Ziesmann and third-year middle Lani Facey each had a solo block and three and four block assists, respectively.
On the Waterloo side, Avery Isaacs had a team-high 15.5 points. Mackenzie Leu also reached the double-digit points plateau with 12.5 and had three aces. Adyson Kelly had a game-high 32 assists.
