The No. 8 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell -3 in overtime to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon in Owen Sound, Ont.
The Blues set the tone in a tight, momentum-swinging matchup, breaking the ice midway through the first period as third-year forward Christina Alexiou beat Waterloo''s defence to a loose puck and buried a breakaway shorthanded to give the Blues the lead. A soldi defensive game from U of T allowed for them to hold the advantage going into the first intermission.
The Blues built on their lead in the second period as third-year forward Abby Whitworth picked the top shelf her league-leading ninth goal of the season. With an assist on the goal, Alexiou notched her second assist of the game. Less than one minute later, first-year forward Petra Klimes converted off a feed from captain Kaitlyn McKnight to give U of T a three-goal advantage. Midway through the period, Waterloo answered back as Brooke Williams buried a rebound but the Blues held a two-goal lead heading into the third period.
The Warriors pressed heavily in the final 20 minutes of regulation time. Tatum James converted in front of the net for a late goal to cut the lead to one and Carly Orth finished off a pass from Nikki McDonald to force overtime. In overtime, Orth struck again to win the game for the Warriors.
Second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon finished the game with 22 saves.
