The No. 10 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Nov. 21) night at Varsity Arena.
In a tightly contest game, the Blues exploded out of the gate, controlling the pace of play in the opening frame. Third-year goalie Carlee Vance delivered a composed first period, turning aside all seven shots she faced. With steady offensive pressure and a strong penalty kill, the Blue and White were rewarded for their efforts. After fifth-year defender Kalie Chan won a puck battle, third-year forward Ashley Delahey sent the loose puck to Taylor Delahey to give U of T a 1-0 lead. A late chance from Waterloo saw Vance stretch out her glove to preserve the lead going into intermission.
Offence opened up for both sides in the second period with Toronto extended the lead as second-year forward Laralee Rizarri buried a power play marker off of a clean setup from Delahey, who notched her second assist of the game. The Warriors were able to respond as Lyndsy Acheson converted on an odd-player rush and Nikki McDonald buried a puck in front to set up an intense third period.
In the third, the Blues controlled the offence with 18 shots on goal. Warriors netminder Kara Mark was strong between the pipes, turning aside all of U of T's chances. At the other end of the ice, a steady Vance who slowed the game down when the Warriors pressed. The Ilderton, Ont., native finished the game with 20 saves. 60 minutes of play wasn't enough for a difference maker as the game went to overtime.
In overtime, Waterloo's Tia Lascelle finished off a pass from Tatum James on a two-on-one attack to claim victory as U of T picked up another point in the OUA East standings.
