The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team hosted the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night (Nov 15), ending their night with a 69-60 loss.
Â
Utilizing defence to keep pace with the high-powered offences across the province, the Blues currently rank Top 10 in the OUA in forcing turnovers, and their stifling defence tonight reflected such. U of T forced Guelph into 10 turnovers in the first half leading to just a five-point lead for the OUA West leading Gryphons at the break. When the pace did pick up, U of T benefited outscoring the visitors 13-2 in fast break points. However, a slower pace of play in the second half, which came about due to a combined 56 free throw attempts between both teams, stalled the Blues from building momentum. Of note, Guelph's Christina Morra shot 16 free throw attempts individually, outpacing the entirety of the rest of her team who combined for an additional 15 shots from the free throw line.
Â
The Blues were led by second-year guard Lia Barbieri flirting with a triple-double registering 16 points, seven rebounds, and six steals. Second-year centre Zi Yang Wang notched 10 points and seven rebounds, while fourth-year forward Janet Enge rounded out the double-digit performances for U of T adding 12 points and three rebounds.
Â
Guelph was led by Morra with a game-high 18 points, 14 of which came from the free throw line, and 8 rebounds. Hannah Bourdon contributed 16 points and nine rebounds.

Up next, the Blues travel to Algoma on Friday (Nov 21), with tip-off set for 8 p.m. The game will be streamed via
