The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team faced Waterloo in a hard-fought match Friday (Nov. 14) night, falling to the Warriors in four sets.
Set scores in the road contest were 25-14, 13-25, 13-25, 25-27.
The Varsity Blues began the game strongly, dominating the first set. Toronto found major momentum early in the set, going on a scoring run that saw them take a substantial 14-5 lead. However, Waterloo quickly shifted the momentum, taking control of the second and third sets to ignite the home crowd. U of T struggled significantly during the third set, registering a negative hitting percentage of -.031. Showing considerable resilience, the Varsity Blues fought back in the fourth set, achieving their highest hitting percentage of the match (.324). Despite pushing the set to extra points, Toronto narrowly dropped the final frame,conceding the match.
Individually, fourth-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu led the Varsity Blues offense with 10 kills. The team's overall points leader was third-year middle Lani Facey, contributing 10.5 total points from eight kills and five block assists..First-year setter Marina Gustke orchestrated the attack, racking up 27 assists, while third-year libero Delaney Watson topped the team defensively with 12 digs.
Both Sydney Batiuk and Avery Isaacs scored a game-high 16 points in the win for the Warriors. Setter Madison Seo also impressed with 41 assists, while Samantha Loshusan saved the Warriors on several occasions recording a game-high 23 digs.
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team will be right back in the Waterloo PAC tomorrow (Nov. 15) afternoon for a rematch. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. with all the action available to stream at oua.tv.
