The No. 8 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 2-1 to the Brock Badgers on Thursday (Nov. 13) night in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Blues showcased their speed, opening the game with strong offensive pressure. Their relentless effort paid off on the power play when fifth-year defender Kalie Chan sent the puck to third-year forward Ashley Delahey beneath the goal line. Delahey threaded a cross-crease pass to her twin sister Taylor Delahey at the back door for her third goal of the season.
Brock responded in the last minute of the first period as Carly Sardine evened the score, finishing off a feed from Malika McDonald. In the second period, Taylor Wolsey found the back of the net to give the Badgers their first lead of the game.
Despite trailing, U of T was able to control pace of play through their speed in the neutral zone and a forecheck that was relentless all game long. Strong goaltender from Megan Thiessen kept the Blues off the board in the second period. At the other end of the ice, second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon made key saves to keep the score at 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.
McKinnon continued her strong play in the third period as Brock looked for an insurance marker with some of the best of her 26 saves win the game. The Blues pushed as the third period progressed with high-danger scoring chances and coming withing inches of striking. With McKinnon pulled for the extra attacker but weren't able to net an equalizer before time expired.
