2025 CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: VARSITY BLUES BASEBALL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team will look to complete a three-peat as they head to the OUA Championship Final Four this weekend (Oct. 10-11) in Waterloo, Ont.

The Blues qualified for the provincial Final Four for the fifth consecutive season after winning all four games at the OUA Central Regional Qualifier, taking down York, Laurentian, and TMU in round robin play before a 7-2 win in the OUA Regional Final on Sunday, Oct. 5. U of T averaged over 10 runs a game during the weekend, totaling 45 runs across the four games played.

Toronto will be joined by the host Waterloo Warriors, as well as the Brock Badgers and Carleton Ravens who also won their regional qualifiers to advance to the Final Four.

Dating back to Sept. 21, U of T have been on a nine-game winning streak. With a 15-3 regular season record they have continued to prove themselves as one of the best teams in the province.

Utilizing an overpowering offence throughout their 2025 campaign, the Blues offence has seen a number of players contributing in different ways. A pair of sophomore standouts have provided a consistent presence at the plate as Marcus Santos led all Blues with 22 RBI this season and Diego Fuentes recorded a team-high 33 hits. Fourth-year veteran infielder Kirk Gibson has provided the power to the lineup with 12 extra-base hits, including three triples and two home runs. Meanwhile, speedsters Sam Aslanaowicz and Spenser Ross have caused chaos on the base path for opponents registering 16 and 15 stolen bases to put themselves in scoring position.

On the mound, fourth-year pitcher Ethan Kwong has stepped into the ace role for the Blues this season. Kwong registered eight strikeouts across six innings during Toronto's regional qualifier finals win versus a very tough Laurentian lineup. This season Kwong has pitched in 25 total innings, tying for a team-high 26 strikeouts and a 2.88 ERA. Adding to the Blues rotation, first-year pitcher Matthew Clarke led all pitchers with 28.1 innings pitched and equaling the team-high of 26 strikeouts. Fifth-year veteran pitchers Connor Broughton and Patrick Stasyszyn have also been relied on during key moments this season.

Toronto have won three of the last four OUA Championships, while medaling at six of the last seven. Their semifinal match-up versus the Waterloo Warriors will mark a rematch of the 2024 gold medal game where U of T claimed a 15-5 win.
