The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team collected another four wins during the final weekend of the OUS regular season, defeating the York Lions and Queen's Gaels in back-to-back doubleheaders.
U of T finish the regular season with an impressive 18-1 record, placing first overall in the OUS East division.
On Saturday (Oct. 4), the Blues earned 5-3 and 8-1 wins over the Lions.
Alexa Aquanno and Olivia Mather split duties in the pitching circle for the tightly contested Game 1 win, combining for 11 strikeouts across seven innings. Meanwhile, at the plate Tala Rennie went a perfect 4-for-4 and Shirley Chan delivered a two-run inside the park home run to take the lead in the top of the second.
In a five inning Game 2, Vanessa Jeffrey delivered the complete game effort allowing just three hits and one run, while recording eight strikeouts. This time it was Jamie Cho who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Sydney Bacheller crushed a three run double to fully pull away from the Lions late.
Shifting to Sunday (Oct. 5), the momentum kept rolling as the Blues scored 25 runs across 11-4 and 14-2 wins versus the Gaels.
Aquanno and Mather once again combined forced in the big Game 1 win. Keeping the streak of perfect plate performances going, Aquanno also went 3-for-3. Cho sent the ball over the fence, finishing with a team-high three RBI, while Chan was untouchable on the base path with four stolen bases in the win.
Blues veteran pitcher Joely Ma earned the win in Game 2, striking out five across four innings. Mather knocked in five RBI and recorded three runs on a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate.
With the OUS regular season coming to a close, the Blues will now head to Calgary for the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association National Championship scheduled to take place from Oct. 10-12. U of T will open the tournament with round-robin contests versus the Humber Hawks, Windsor Lancers, and UBCO Heat.Â
