The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-0 on Friday (Oct. 31) night at Varsity Arena.
In a fast-paced opening 20 minutes of play, the Blues broke the ice in the late stages of the frame. Fourth-year captain Mark Cooper stormed into the offensive zone and set up fourth-year forward Eddie Yan in front of the net. Yan's shot squeaked behind Lancers goaltender Max Donoso and was loose on the goal line as second-year forward Dylan Wightman jammed it in for his fourth goal of the season.
In the second period, Wightman notched his second goal of the game. From the top of the slot, he fired home a pass from third-year forward Rylee Hlusiak extending the lead to 2-0. At the other end of the ice, first-year goaltender Nick Surzycia was strong between the pipes turning aside strong Windsor chances to keep Toronto ahead by a pair of goals going into the third period.
U of T extended their lead in the third period after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone, second-year forward Sam Marit came down the wing and roofed a shot past Donoso for his first goal in the OUA. As the game progressed, the Blues played a strong defensive game, forcing Windsor to the outside and getting sticks and bodies in front of pucks. Surzycia was stellar in goal with 29 saves in his first OUA shutout. Second-year forward Sean Clarke sealed the win for U of T with an empty net goal.
The Blues are back in action on Thursday (Nov. 6) night when they travel to St. Catharines to face the Brock Badgers. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m., and will be streamed live on
